Banig (Hand woven mats)

Banig and Hand woven bagsBanig is a handwoven mat that is usually used for sleeping or used as a mat for picnics or decoration for some households. This is typically used due to its colorful and artistic designs, and most often used during the hot summer days because it is known to have a cooling and refreshing effect in the body. It is usually made up of pandan or Tikog leaves that are cut into strips, dyed and woven to different designs, shapes and sizes.

Nowadays, banigs are also used as bags, hats and even place mats. Designs and purpose might vary and evolve in time, but the art and culture behind each woven Banig will always linger and be part of every Filipino.
