Panagbenga Festival 2009

Panagbenga Street DancingPanagbenga is a month-long annual flower festival that is celebrated in Baguio City. The festival includes floats that are decorated with flowers; street dancing, presented by dancers clad in flower-inspired costumes; and activities for locals and tourists alike to enjoy.

The Panagbenga Festival was formerly known as the Baguio Flower Festival when it started in 1995. It was formed by Attorney Damaso Bangaoet Jr. of the John Hay Poro Point Development Corporation (JPDC) and Victor A. Lim of the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA). Entries from the annual Camp John Hay art contest gave its official logo: a spray of sunflowers. The festival was set in February to boost tourism as it was considered as a month of inactivity between the busy days of Christmas season and the Holy Week and the summer season.

In 1996, archivist and curator Ike Picpican suggested that the festival be renamed as Panagbenga, a Kankanaey term that means "a season of blossoming, a time for flowering".

This year is the 14th year of the Pangabenga Festival, also celebrated as part of the year long celebration of Baguio’s centennial (100 years old) celebration as a chartered city on September 1, 2009.

“Magandang Baguio po sa inyong lahat. When I say Magandang Baguio it means good governance, good environment and good citizenry. Come join us. Baguio is everybody’s home.  Come and celebrate with us and continue to keep Baguio clean and green. Panagbenga Festival 2009, Our Festival… Yours too…” cited Gabby Keith, tourism operation officer II and head of the media relations of the tourism sector in Baguio City.

Around 3,000 rooms are available to accommodate tourists and travelers alike. Tents are also allowed and encouraged in certain areas for visitors to enjoy the climate and nature of Baguio City.
