Dr. Antonio Mateo, Handicapped wheelchair

Antonio MateoAn electrical, mechanical, industrial and plastic engineer, Dr. Mateo, has already invented more than 55 inventions up to this time and is still going.

He had been an inventor since 1978. His first invention is called “Double Flaring Tool” that solves leakages, focuses on the reduction of non revenue water, and makes the joints stronger than the pipe. It is now being used all over the Philippines.

At this time, he is trying to make this product suitable for household pipes. Knowing that our country is in the earthquake zone, there is a continuous movement on the ground. He will be focusing his time on this project for the next two years.

Dr. Mateo is focusing on the handicapped, senior citizens and in the environment for his inventions. He also ventured into creating a toy, due to environmental concerns. He created a top made of scrap materials. What makes this unique is the balance and momentum. It spins longer than a typical top and the wire is already attached to the toy so that it won’t get lost. “When stressed out, it’s a nice way to unwind, its environmental friendly and it creates jobs” said Dr. Mateo. An out of school youth cooperative in Batangas benefits from this as they are the ones that produced these toys.

But what caught our attention is his creation of the Handicapped wheelchair. The idea came to him when his brother had a stroke. Being a huge man, it is a pity to see his wife and caretaker carry him to and from the bed to the CR just to take a pee. Dr. Mateo then invented this one of a kind, custom-made handicapped wheelchair. This wheelchair can be a CR, bath, bed and transport. At this time, he accepts orders, all custom-made provided he know the height of the patient.

Some of the achievements Dr. Mateo received are: Gold medal awardee as the best inventor of the year in WIPO, Geneva Switzerland in 1994; Outstanding manila Inventor in the field of water system in 1999; and just a few months ago, an outreach solution passed by congress by the Chairman of Science and technology, Congressman Abaya gave him recommendation during the session, it was the first time that this recommendation was given to a Filipino inventor.
