Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm

Iwahig Prison and Penal FarmFounded on November 16, 1904 by 1st Superintendent Mr. R.J. Shields, the place was originally named IUHIT PENAL SETTLEMENT. It was intended initially to isolate the worst and incorrigible offenders / prisoners at the Old Bilibid Prison in Manila.

But in 1907, the Phil. Commission Act 1723 effected penal reforms including the change of name to IWAHIG PENAL COLONY. Then it was called IWAHIG PRISON& PENAL FARM by virtue of PD 28 in 1972 and was converted into a regional prison.

Its total land area is about 28,330 hectares.

The IWAHIG PRISON& PENAL FARM (IPPF) not only confine prisoners, but also prevents prisoners from committing crimes. IPPF provides humane treatment / condition to inmates (as the prisoners are called), provide rehabilitative programs and engage the inmates in agro- industries.

IPPF is also known as the prison without bars; where inmates live and work like free men in the field of farming, handicrafts and woodcrafts.

Because of this, the Iwahig Prison was recognized and considered as one of the tourist spots in Palawan.

Tourists are welcome to visit and enjoy different activities such as cruising or fishing in the Iwahig River and firefly watching. Souvenir shop was also established in the compound to display the handicrafts the inmates have created. Buying these souvenirs help supply their personal needs such as toiletries and other daily expenses.
