Buko Pie, Espasol, Puto Binan and Balut, What do they have in common?

Biggest Buko PieThey are just few of the best products of Laguna. Savor the rich flavors of coconut as you eat Buko pie (Coconut pie). It is one of the region’s specialty that is why they were able to get the honor to be in the Guiness Book of Record for having the biggest Buko Pie in 2006 where more than 5000 people where able to enjoy. Buko Pie is the combination of Coconut, sugar and all purpose flour.

Espasol, a delectable recipe made from glutinous rice or cornmeal, brown sugar and coconut is one of the finest delicacies that Laguna is known for. That is why this year, they have made the LONGEST ESPASOL that stretches one (1) kilometer in length and 2.5” to 3” in diameter. Using up to 600 kgs of glutinous rice, 12 sacks of sugar and 4000 coconuts! This is truly, the Longest and Biggest Espasol I have ever seen!

Puto Binan (Rice Cake) in the other hand is made up of grounded rice, white sugar, baking powder, Lihya, and water. This is Binan, Laguna’s specialty and is usually colored yellow or brown. Never leave Laguna without tasting this delicacy.

Balut, it’s a fertilized duck egg with an embryo. It’s like eating boiled egg with a delicious surprise inside. This delicious delicacy is one favorite of Filipinos, usually eaten with a pinch of salt or a few drops of vinegar to enhance the flavor. It is best eaten hot and is known to enhance your system or as they say “Pampalakas ng tuhod” (Will give strength to your knees/ an “aphrodisiac food” so they said). Visiting the Philippines will never be complete without trying out the balut.
