Wines of Ilocos Norte

BasiIlocos Norte is one of the four provinces in Region I. The province was first explored by the Spanish conquistador, juan de Salcedo in 1572. As they sailed along the coast, they saw numerous sheltered coves (looc) where the locals lived in harmony. As a result, they named the region (Ylocos) and its people Ylocanos.

At present, Ilocos Norte is now known for their wines.

Basi is a popular wine product if Ilocos Norte. It is made from the red-grinded sugarcane variety.  It’s rich and lush taste can be attributed to the generations-old process of fermenting wine done the traditional “Ilokano” way.

Rice wine on the other hand, is fermented in the upland farms of the municipality of Badoc. They were able to acquire the latest technology available to guarantee a product with world class quality.

Another wine you shouldn’t miss is the Duhat (Black Plum/Java Plum) wine. It is fermented 3-12 months and becomes more refined in taste as it ages.

Whatever kind of wine you choose, you will surely get a taste of  Ilocano culture and their heritage.
