Chinese New Year in Manila

Chinese New Year in BinondoThe Philippines was influenced greatly by different cultures over time. But the Chinese have been a great influence in every Filipinos life.

That is why, it’s not a surprise to be able to see how many Filipinos celebrate the Chinese new year with our fellow chinoys every year. Great number of people came to Chinatown year after year to celebrate and this year was no different, welcoming the year of the ox last January 25 and 26.

Chinese temples were filled with people, rushing over as early as January 25 midnight, to be able to give the first prayer of the year. Incense, candles, fruits and flowers were offered in the altars. Everybody is welcome in the temple, Filipinos and Chinese alike.

Wearing anything red is also a familiar sight during these days. Signifying good health, long life and prosperity.

Fruits such as orange, apple, grapes, and pongkan are sold in every street corner. Tikoys are also a big hit. And yes, even our fellow kababayans are a fan of this practice. People of all walks of life buy round fruits for their dining table and tikoy to keep the family closer together.

Dragon and Lion dances was seen in the streets all day long, accompanied by loud beats of the drum, cymbals and fireworks.  Ampao (money placed inside a red envelope) are placed on doors and entrances to attract the dragon to bless the household or businesses for prosperity for the coming year. Ampao was also given on the streets to children during a parade.

The spirit of the holidays always brings the best in everyone. But celebrating it in the Philippines is far better because we celebrate it with good food, and good company composed of our closest friends and family.
