Photoworld Asia 2010

old cameras PhotoWorld is the biggest photo event held every year since 1987. It is one of the most awaited events of every Filipino photography enthusiasts, amateur, hobbyist and professional alike. PhotoWorld Asia was held last Janaury 29 to February 2, 2010.

For years, the event was held merely as a competition among (more or less) 25 photography clubs in the country. But this year, there’s more to it than the competition. Manny Inumerable, Chairman for PhotoWorld Asia 2010 wanted this year to be entertaining and as the same time educational, for young and old alike.

As this year’s theme stated, “Philippine Photography in Changing Times”, the event held 3 exhibits. First, the Photo and Trade exhibit that was held in Glorietta 5; displayed here are the photographs for  the competition and a display of latest photographic equipments available.

The 2nd Exhibit was held in Art and Space Glorietta 4 where Iconic Images and Vintage Cameras were on display. Photographs taken from the 1800s to the 1980s where enlarged and mounted on the walls of the exhibit,  “The reason its until 1980, the camera went digital.” Cited Wilfred Marbella, PhotoWorld Asia curator. This exhibit also included 11 showcases  that displayed a wide variety of cameras used from the 1800s such as the single lens reflex, twin lens reflex, the brownies, view cameras, stereo cameras, polaroids, and range finders. The last 4 showcases are for the special cameras such as a gold plated camera, and even one camera that was used in space!

The third exhibit, was held in Glorietta Activity Center,  where you can find and buy the latest photographic equipment in the country.  From cameras, software, to gadgets, lenses and everything you need in photography all under one roof.

Aside from these exhibits, simultaneously, seminars were also conducted in AIM Conference Center Manila. From lighting, exposures, photoshop, ‘crossing bridges’ to ‘Portrait as a landscape of emotions’ was discussed in the seminars. Speakers like Kevin Ames, Eddie Ng and our very own Manny Librodo are among the speakers of this event.

As good as this all sounds, all this only lasted for 5 days. Year after year, PhotoWorld Asia aims to feature something different. I can’t wait what they have in store for next year!

Photoworld Asia 2010 is a yearly project of the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation, Inc.
